Dr. Kao Kim Hourn Assumes Position of ASEAN Secretary-General

JAKARTA: Senior Cambodian official, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, has officially assumed the position of ASEAN Secretary-General in a ceremony held in Jakarta, Indonesia on Monday, 9 January 2023.

The event was presided over by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi. Former Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dato Lim Jock Hoi, was also present for the occasion.

“It was an honor for me to officially assume the position of ASEAN Secretary-General during the handover ceremony presided over by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi," said Dr. Kao Kim Hourn. "I wish to thank both Foreign Minister Retno for her important role and Dato Lim Jock Hoi for his great contributions to ASEAN."

Prior to taking on this new role, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn served two terms as Minister Delegate attached to the Prime Minister of Cambodia since September 2013. His career has been focused on strengthening Cambodia’s international relations, particularly in ASEAN, driving policy advocacy, and promoting education and development. He has also authored dozens of books about ASEAN.

The position of ASEAN Secretary-General is a five year term. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn is the first Cambodian to hold this position.
